Reducing Your Cholesterol Levels Naturally
High cholesterol is one of the most common health problems people worry about today. I have my own thoughts about cholesterol…and the main cause of heart disease…but for now, most people do worry about high cholesterol and their health, so it makes me want to talk about how you can manage your cholesterol levels naturally. If you are someone with cholesterol levels higher than the normal range, it is recommended that you start taking steps towards reducing cholesterol in order to avoid experiencing its many negative health consequences.
Despite all of the negative publicity about cholesterol, not all types of cholesterol are actually harmful to the body. There is a type of cholesterol called high density lipoprotein (HDL) that is good for you and for preventing heart problems. So, when we talk about reducing cholesterol levels, we are only referring to the “bad” cholesterol……and not the “good” HDL.
Raising your HDL levels is actually necessary in order to counteract the negative effects of the bad. The bad cholesterol is known as low density lipoproteins (LDL). LDL is the type of cholesterol that gradually builds up in the arteries, making it harder for the blood to flow. These buildups then cause the heart to pump harder, straining it and triggering all sorts of painful and dangerous cardiovascular problems.
Lifestyle Methods for Reducing Cholesterol
Health experts agree that the best method for reducing cholesterol is to make positive changes to your lifestyle and I couldn’t agree more!
- Alcohol and Smoking – Quitting smoking is a great way to start, along with cutting down on your alcohol consumption.
- Exercise – Cardio exercises are also recommended in order to keep the heart in excellent shape and to keep cholesterol levels within the normal range. Even if you are busy, there are many ways to incorporate some cardio routines into your day. Try taking the stairs up to your office instead of riding the elevator, or taking a brisk 15-minute walk around the neighborhood before going to work. You can also take up a new weekend sport, which is a much better alternative to lying on the couch watching movies or munching on junk food all day. Weekend sports are also great social activities and a good way to meet other people who also value a healthy lifestyle.
- Diet – Dietary changes are another effective method for reducing cholesterol. Stay away from fast foods and add a few more healthy vegetables. Fast food restaurants are known for not providing you with healthy nutrition. You should eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, lean white meats and whole grain products, such as oats. You could also replace your dairy products with alternative choices or cut down on your intake.
If you are trying to implement the above methods and your cholesterol levels remain high, you may want to try an herbal cholesterol lowering supplement instead of taking statins. These are an alternative to statin medications that have many side effects!
