Massage therapy is all the rage these days and it’s no wonder why. People are stressed and tense, and when that happens, we find that we don’t function as well as we would if we were loose and comfortable. There are a couple of commonly used forms of massage that are used and it’s up to you to decide which type of massage therapy will work best for you, but you need a little information first.
Swedish Massage Therapy
One of the more commonly practiced forms of massage therapy until recently is the Swedish method of massage. This is the “common” or “traditional” massage and you can tell that you’re getting this type of massage because of the long strokes which are used to relax muscles. With common strokes that move from the neck down using the fingertips, and use of the whole hand and the pad of the thumb, this type of massage therapy is comfortable and relaxing to those who choose to get one.
Swedish massage therapy uses kneading of the muscles and different techniques to encourage better circulation and enhance the flexibility of the muscles. Another technique which is often used is called friction and this is often applied for a “deep massage”, which is often painful the first time that it’s done, but has been said to have the best results. With friction, the fingertips are used near the joints and bony areas of the body to create circular motions. This is said to get to the deep muscles and help them to relax.
Ayurvedic Massage Therapy
The other type of massage therapy that is making a comeback in many areas is known as Ayurvedic massage and it originates in India. This type of massage is said to create harmony and balance in the body, while working to eliminate toxins and refresh the body. Ayurvedic massage is based on an idea which includes knowledge of the Greek and Ayurvedic form of medicine and focuses on the pressure points.
This type of massage therapy will use oils that are specifically chosen according to your pressure points and your being. One way of using these oils involves brushing the skin and then massaging, while another form of this type of massage includes a “slimming” technique that incorporates herbal powders. There is also an Ayurvedic foot massage, in which the therapist offers a deep massage by using his feet.
Regardless of what type of massage therapy you choose, your goal is to decompress and relax and that means having someone work on your muscles to ease the tension which has been built up within them for a long time. When you are considering any type of massage therapy, make sure to have a consultation before you begin so you will know what to expect and then be ready to relax and feel your tension melt away.
