Body Detoxification – Diets and Side Effects
Body detox diets are gaining incredible popularity for weight loss and cleansing. Most people generally think of alcohol and drug addiction when the word “detoxification” is mentioned. In a body detox diet, the concept is the same, except these diets provide a cleansing measure to rid the digestive system of harmful toxins and aid in overall improved health.
Why Do a Detox Diet?

Potential Side Effects
Like with anything else we subject our bodies to, there is a potential for side effects. Because of the limitations on intake, one may experience caffeine withdrawals while on the detox diet. Withdrawal symptoms often include headaches, but this should resolve within the first couple of days.
Instead of going “cold turkey” on caffeine, it is recommended to slowly decrease intake in an effort to control withdrawal symptoms.
Diarrhea is also a not-so-pleasant side effect associated with detox diets. Severe diarrhea can lead to dehydration, so its important to keep pushing fluids. On the other side of the coin, constipation may be present. This happens particularly in cases where a great amount of fiber is in the diet without increased fluids. A good balance will lessen the chances of developing constipation.
Aside from the above bigger complaints, a person might feel lethargic, hungry and even a short temper. The body is undergoing a dramatic change and is learning how to react. These toxins have been in the digestive system for so long, it may take a couple of days for them to properly be released and the revitalization process to begin.
If these or any side effects continue or get increasingly worse, it is recommended to stop the detoxification process and consult a qualified health professional for advise.
Detox diets are meant for a short and defined course. Animal products are usually eliminated from the diet, thus daily nutrient requirements aren’t met. Continued detox may cause nutritional deficiencies, therefore stick to the recommended course and only continue if tolerable. In the end your body and digestive system will thank you!
