My father had cluster headaches all his life and my sisters and I have suffered with migraines for most of ours! If you do, you know headaches can be extremely painful. I hate to think how many tablets my mother gave me as a child to kill the pain. I don’t blame her she only did what the doctors told her to do.
What I did many years ago, when I became focused on natural health and healing, was to clean my liver from all the toxic overload from all the painkillers I had been taking. My liver was so toxic (yes, I had a test to find out) that I set to work ‘cleaning it’. Three months later, and days in bed going through OTC drug withdrawals, my liver was clean, I felt great, and no more headaches to this day!
Now you have to understand, I know what it’s like to have migraines, be in bed for days and taken to hospital because they are so bad you don’t want to live anymore. I’ve seen my own father (when I would sneak downstairs because I would hear a noise) kicking his feet against the brick fireplace, just to get the pain focus away from his cluster throbbing head!
Now if you are saying, “Jennifer, but mine are really bad!” Believe me, I understand the pain you may be feeling.
Get Rid of Headaches with Natural Remedies
The first thing I recommend, from my own experience, is to clean your liver! All I did was stop taking pain killers, stop drinking coffee and start drinking lemon juice in hot water every morning! I replaced my coffee with lemon juice. As I said before, I was in bed for days with both caffeine and pill withdrawals. It was terrible and very eye-opening! I couldn’t believe my body was addicted to both!
So before you decide to reach for the medicine cabinet and grab your painkiller medication, why not try doing what I just said and then try these all natural remedies for headaches if you do happen to get one.

Of the three main types of headaches is the tension headache, and it is the most common. With this type of headache the muscles contract and it feels like something is literally squeezing your head. The pain can run from one ear to the other and back around the head. Tension headaches are usually caused by a lack of sleep and/or stress.
Natural Remedies For Tension Headaches
- Ginger Tea
Fresh ginger can easily be found at your local grocery store. Crush up no more than an inch of ginger and put it in a pot of boiling water. This homemade remedy will help reduce inflammation and ease your headache. It works just as good, and I would love to say better than any aspirin, and is a completely natural plant based remedy.
- Peppermint Oil
Peppermint oil can be applied to your hairline. The cooling sensation created by the oil will help relax the muscles in your head and neck. Plus, if your headache is due to tiredness, the peppermint oil makes you alert, so can ease the fighting to stay awake.
Cluster headaches…clusters of migraines all at once…that last for days, weeks, even months at a time! They are most common in the winter. I can’t imagine the pain of a cluster headache, when migraines are painful enough.
My father used to suffer with these for 3 months at a time. Every September through to January…every year…year in, year out. He knew the day they would start. In between, he had migraines. Today, I wish he was still here to try some natural remedies for his headaches, but perhaps after 47 years of living in hell, his body couldn’t take it anymore.
Natural Remedies For Cluster Headaches
- Capsaicin Cream
Cayenne pepper is the main ingredient in Capsaicin cream. Put a dab on your finger and apply it to the inside of your nostril. It sounds ‘ouchy’ but be sure to place it on the side where you are experiencing the pain. Once applied the cream will go to work. It works by blocking pain signals. You can find Capsaicin cream at your local health food store.
- Chlorophyll Supplements
Chlorophyll supplements are used for many health issues. The reason chlorophyll supplements are used for cluster headaches is because cluster headaches are due to a lack of oxygen getting to the brain. Chlorophyll is used by plants for photosynthesis in the process of turning carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates and oxygen.
Therefore, chlorophyll supplements promote the flow of oxygen to cells, while also protecting the cells from oxidation damage and can naturally help with cluster headaches. There is also liquid chlorophyll, whereby placing ten drops of liquid chlorophyll concentrate on the tongue several times throughout the day and then drinking some water, may help with cluster headaches and provide natural energy to get you through the day.
- L-Tryptophan Supplements

First, take your finger and place it in the groove between your first and second toe. Press firmly and apply pressure for at least three minutes. If you can, hold it for a total of 5 minutes before letting go. Of course, you can always go see a massage therapist who will really help you professionally.
Feverfew is an herbal supplement that comes from the sunflower family. It has been tested in clinical trials with great results. During these trials, Feverfew was shown to be a very effective treatment for migraines. It works by decreasing the amount of inflammation in the area where there is pain.
When inflammation is reduced, it eliminates pressure on the nerves. As a result, the migraine starts to subside. You can find feverfew in capsule form in your health store.
- Changing Your Diet
As you can see, there are many different natural remedies for the various types of headaches. However, one remedy can be applied to all headaches no matter what type. That remedy is to simply change your diet because certain foods can trigger a headache.
Start paying close attention to the foods you consume on a daily basis. Keeping a journal and jotting down everything you eat for at least 7 days is helpful so you can track any specific foods that cause you to have an adverse reaction. Once you identify a pattern, you will know which foods should be removed from your diet.
Some foods that have been known to trigger headaches include:
- Alcohol – It can cause dehydration, which can cause a headache.
- Caffeine, or the lack of it if you drink too much! Try to eliminate it and see if you achieve the results I have!
- Cheese – Aged or fermented, moldy cheeses. I love cheese…and still eat it everyday without getting a migraine. However, it is one food that may trigger yours.
- Processed meats.
- Preservatives and additives. MSG is a big one.
- Artificial sweeteners.
As you can see, it’s all foods that are not natural! Whole foods, fresh and in their unaltered state will help get rid of your headaches. No wonder the world is full of migraine sufferers. All our foods today are ‘fiddled’ with in some way, so that they taste better…or last longer. So eliminate all foods filled with garbage!
Headaches can also be a result of skipping meals. Anytime you skip meals your blood sugar levels drop. The best way to prevent blood sugar level spikes, is to make it a point to always eat your meals on time and never let hunger lead to a headache.
